The difference between BMW M, M Sport and M Performance

BMW M Performance Parts, BMW M, M Sport and M Performance, One letter helped to highlight BMW’s reputation as a manufacturer of performance and sporty vehicles: Originally, M badges were reserved for slightly modified racing cars, such as the M1 supercar and the E30 M3 sports sedan. Today, however, the BMW M can be found on a range of powerful and fast cars, like the X5 and X6 SUVs. But not all M badges mean the same thing.

The Pfister autotechnik store has a wide selection of them.

If you’re in the market for a BMW with exceptional performance, the M series might be of interest to you. In this review, we share some essential information about the difference between the BMW M, M Sport and M Performance.

BMW M Sport

The entry level or lowest rung on the ladder of the BMW M is the M Sport. Unlike M Performance or M, which are unique vehicle variants, “M Sport” is actually an accessory package that can be added to almost any BMW.

Even high-end models like the 7 Series, 8 Series and X7 can all be ordered with the M Sport package. The contents of the M Sport package may vary from vehicle to vehicle and from country to country.

However, it adds custom exterior and interior touches. This includes the small M badges, darker exterior and interior trim, larger wheels, a sportier looking body kit and a special steering wheel. Some BMWs, however, get an even more specific upgrade.

BMW M Performance

Let’s take it up a notch, One notch above M Sport is M Performance. The badge on the trunk is an easy way to distinguish the two. A 340i with the M Sport package, for example, will simply say “340i”; the M Performance version, the BMW M340i, will actually say “M340i.” And while M Sport is mostly about looks, M Performance adds real speed. Going back to the 3 Series, the M340i gets a different engine than the standard car.

The stock engine in the 3 Series is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 255 horsepower. The M340i, on the other hand, gets a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder with 382 horsepower. Although it no longer has a manual transmission, the M Performance version comes with M Sport brakes, an M Sport exhaust, larger wheels and sportier tires, additional selectable driving modes and a standard electronic locking rear differential.

BMW M

M Performance cars may be the fastest and most powerful versions available, but BMW officially considers its M products to be distinct models because of the extent of the performance modifications.

That’s why official M cars don’t have a trim designation; for example, the M3 and X6 M are simply marked “M3” and “X6 M.” And while the M Performance cars are primarily intended for road driving, all BMW M SUVs and cars are designed for track use.

BMW is offering all X5 M and X6 M buyers training at one of its M driving centers, which, given what the M models get, is probably very necessary. Most obvious is even more power.

The stock BMW M3 uses the same 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder as the M340i, but in the M3F80 it makes 425 horsepower. The M3 Competition increases that power even further, to 444 horsepower. The M3G80 offers up to 510 horsepower. But the M-specific modifications go further than that.

Inevitably, all these performance and handling features add up.

The exact price of the M Sport package differs from model to model, but the M Performance versions add even more cost. Whichever M package you choose, one thing is certain, you’ll get a premium BMW vehicle with plenty of power.

A high-performance upgrade, multiple innovations in the areas of transmission, braking systems and suspension, the new BMW M3G80 and the new BMW M4G82 have set new standards in the high-performance sedan and coupe segment.

BMW engineers , extensive motorsport know-how

Their newly developed inline six-cylinder engines are more powerful than those of the previous generation and form the basis for this. The M TwinPower Turbo technology and the high-rev concept of the engines impress with performance characteristics taken directly from motor racing, without restricting the high level of everyday capability of the BMW M models.

To further enhance the DNA and automotive spirit of the new BMW M3 G80 and the new BMW M4 G82, a special range of M Performance parts is available. These parts allow the striking design of the vehicles to be customized and their dynamic behavior to be improved.

The M Performance Parts range was developed in cooperation with BMW M GmbH, based on the experience gained on racetracks around the world and the extensive motorsport know-how of its BMW engineers.

Why bmw M3 /M4 will be a radical game changer ?

The components, which have been specially adapted to tThe components, which have been specially adapted to the character of the new BMW M3 G80 and the new BMW M4 82, further enhance their sporty appearance. And most of them meet the technical requirements for lightweight construction and aerodynamics, thus enhancing the dynamic characteristics of both high-performance models.

Suspension and sound more closely linked to motor sport.

The M Performance titanium muffler system is a perfect example of how M Performance parts typically improve not only the appearance but also the performance of a car. This lightweight exhaust system with valve control, developed specifically for M models and based on racing experience, weighs about five kilograms less than the standard component and also offers an even sportier driving experience thanks to optimized exhaust gas routing.

The highly emotional, motorsport-like sound has been adapted to individual driving programs. The four ceramic-coated titanium exhaust tips give it an unmistakable appearance.

The sporty M Performance suspension was developed and fine-tuned on various tracks. The spring suspension allows a gradual reduction of the ride height by five to twenty millimeters (recommended lowering of -10 mm compared to the basic M model).

With unchanged shock absorber settings, the driver benefits from a lower center of gravity, reduced rolling motion and even higher cornering speeds. In addition to the improved dynamics, the lowering also enhances the sporty appearance.

Directly derived from the BMW Motorsport long-distance brake pads, the M Performance sport brake linings ensure shorter braking distances, better braking response and high thermal resistance.

Drivers who frequently want to explore the performance potential of their BMW M3 G80 or M4 G82 on the racetrack will be delighted, among other things, by the exceptionally dynamic steering behavior of the vehicle when braking before a turn compared to the stock configuration .

Carbon makes the appearance even more impressive.

Carbon is characterized by a high degree of rigidity and strength while being extremely light. This is why carbon fiber reinforced elements are mainly used in many areas where visible carbon components fascinate with their characteristic mesh structure.

For this reason in particular, M Performance elements are carefully tailored to effectively reinforce the sporty design of the BMW M3 G80 and the BMW M4 G82.

The M Performance Carbon front fastener, the M Performance Carbon front splitter and the M Performance Carbon Aero Flicks give a particularly striking appearance.

From the side, the M Performance Carbon air intakes add visual appeal and the M Performance Carbon side skirts make the vehicle appear longer.

At the rear, M Performance Carbon rear fins and the distinctive M Performance Carbon rear spoiler bring a perfect balance to the vehicle’s appearance.

This is complemented by an M Performance Carbon rear diffuser combined with the M Performance Titanium muffler system and the M Performance Titanium exhaust trim module with ceramic coating and matte black finish.

The M Performance carbon/titanium exhaust tips also offer a sporty option to customize the standard exhaust system of the BMW M3 G80 and BMW M4 G82 Competition.

The high-performance models can be further customized with M Performance Motorsport films.

The M Performance design kit contains adhesive films for each side in the three BMW M colors blue, red and purple and is tailored to the vehicle geometry.

Forged wheels in sizes up to 21 inches and mixed tires.

The M Performance parts range for the new BMW M3 G80 Sedan and the new BMW M4 G82 includes two complete summer wheel sets.

The entry-level set is the M Performance 963M Y-spoke forged wheel in Frozen Gunmetal Grey with M Performance lettering and mixed tires, 19-inch front and 20-inch rear.

It impresses with its unique geometry and guarantees a high degree of stiffness and low weight as well as reduced air resistance, especially at high speeds.

M Performance winter vs summer !

The highlight of the summer wheel lineup is the BMW M Performance 1000M cross-spoke forged wheel in matte gold bronze or matte jet black with M Performance lettering. The wheels are available exclusively from M Performance Parts in 20-inch front and 21-inch rear.

Perfect winter traction: 19-inch wheel set with snow chains. For safe winter driving on snow and ice.

M Performance Parts also offers the complete 829M 19-inch double-spoke winter wheel set, compatible with snow chains. The rim, finished in matte black, is ideal for tackling winter conditions and is especially easy to clean.

Our experts recommend M Performance tire bags for optimal storage and convenient transport of currently unmounted wheel sets. Perfect winter traction: 19-inch wheel set with snow chains.

With the M Performance lettering, M color flag and leather trim with contrasting decorative stitching, the perfectly matched M Performance front and rear floor mats reflect the extremely dynamic exterior design inside the vehicle.

The M Performance carbon interior trim also contributes to this. They inspire with a combination of open-pore matte carbon and Alcantara . They are handcrafted in an intricate process, so each is a unique piece.

Alcantara M Performance knee pads on the center console complete the range of interior finishes. The M Performance Pro steering wheel features the use of Alcantara, which is widely used in the racing world, not least because of its grip properties. Thus, the pronounced Alcantara grip area with wide thumb rests and a special coating offers the driver maximum grip and a very direct steering feel. Other features are inspired by motorsport, such as the blue center marker at the 12 o’clock position and a hand-sewn M seam in the brand’s colors.

In addition to the standard leather-covered steering wheel trim, the M Performance Carbon/Alcantara steering wheel trim and the optional M Performance Carbon/Leather steering wheel, each with M Performance lettering, are available.

The M Performance steering wheel can be complemented with M Performance Carbon paddles covered in open-pore carbon fabric instead of the standard chrome surface.

Bright MPerformance Design

M Performance sliders for BMW’s LED door lights help draw attention when entering and exiting the vehicle.

When the door is opened, the BMW M logo and other M Performance motifs are projected onto the asphalt. When locking and unlocking the vehicle, the driver can experience the M Performance concept both visually and by touch thanks to the M Performance key fob made of Alcantara with carbon insert.

The key fob is firmly connected to the car key by a hex head screw in M Light Blue, making it easy to turn the key in the fob and protecting it from scratches and other scuffs.

M Performance interior cover

The M Performance interior cover effectively protects the vehicle from dirt and scratches when parked in the garage. The cover, which comes in a convenient carrying bag, is made of breathable, elastic polyester with a soft lining that preserves the paint and is machine washable.

The cover dresses up the body perfectly and highlights various design elements, such as the double kidney grille, for example, with the colorful M logo and the letters M Performance.
