RacingLine TRIFOAM® Filter :

• With the Trifoam three-layer foam filter, three different densities of foam are sewn together to form large sheets, then hand-cut and sewn onto plastic material to form the shape.
• RacingLine’s application for this foam material comes from the need to develop the best induction materials for their racing programs over the past 20 years.
• For RacingLine, the preference for foam is also due to its tolerance to dust loading, which is much better than cotton or paper. RacingLine’s Trifoam is known as a “multi-layer depth loading media”. What does this mean? When dust is thrown into the material, the depth of the foam traps it by keeping the airways open longer instead of collecting it on the surface.
• In contrast, cotton filters (as well as factory paper filters) are called “surface-loaded media,” which means that all the dirt collects on the surface of the filter, slowly blocking the airways.
• This means that the Trifoam filter can handle much more dust and perform better and longer in most environments.
• Foam filters weigh a fraction of what a cotton filter does. In addition, the design used by RacingLine results in a considerable increase in surface area. Unlike many models that use a cap on the air filter, the open end of the Trifoam filter is made entirely of usable filter material. And a filter is all about surface area.

RacingLine Cotton filter :

• The RacingLine cotton filter is an extremely robust and durable filter, but it also has excellent flow characteristics and a minimal initial pressure drop.
• Ultimately, the performance of a filter depends on its surface area. The deep pleats of the RacingLine cotton filter significantly increase the surface area, while the epoxy-coated gauze wraps the cotton with a durable outer layer.
• It consists of three layers of extremely finely woven cotton, tightly bound at the top and bottom by the mesh. The material is then pleated and shaped by hand. By increasing the surface area, these pleats increase the filtration capacity and dirt absorption. The mesh provides the support needed to keep the filter material from being sucked into the engine and also provides a durable outer layer to protect against heavier dirt. When clean, the two filters are nearly identical in performance. The initial pressure drop figures are just as good, and in terms of horsepower and torque, the difference is almost negligible.
• The cotton filter material will eventually clog up faster if you throw a lot of dirt at it quickly (like following another car on a dusty road).
• All this dirt builds up on the surface of the filter and gradually clogs it – eventually limiting engine power as the filter’s efficiency decreases.
• As the dirt tries to pass through, it begins to accumulate first in the lower valley of the pleats and slowly works its way up to the tops. This is not at all dangerous for your engine, as it still provides complete filtration. But gradually, you may notice that the performance is not what it used to be and that’s the perfect time to replace your filter.
• In short, the pleated cotton filter becomes rather restrictive, while the foam remains very open.
• The Cotton filter has other advantages as well. RacingLine’s continues to use a giant air horn / ram pipe, as does the Trifoam design which offers clear advantages over the competition. It marginally reduces weight and allows for easy connection to the factory turbo intake hoses or our silicone hose upgrades with guaranteed smooth, beautiful airflow.
