An anniversary diet,1.000 units 307 km/h –

BMW M4 CSL The Re-Edition OF a MASTERPIECE. This year, BMW’s M sport department celebrates its 50th anniversary. This is the perfect time to launch a new CSL. For this, the BMW M4 Competition is on a diet and is now setting a BMW lap record on the Nordschleife as a reward.

With the M4 CSL, BMW brings back a legendary name after 18 years. The fastest production model currently available has 550 hp, which only acts on the rear wheels, and should also shine on the Nordschleife. Its edition is limited to 1,000 units. All of them have already been allocated. The new BMW M4 CSL unveiled

BMW M4 CSL:

For the 50th anniversary of the Munich sports department, a CSL is making a comeback after almost twenty years. These three letters make the eyes of BMW fans shine, because they promise the pure driving dynamics that the letter M, in its purest form.

For the 50th anniversary of the M engineers, BMW M offers itself and its fans a new CSL.

Coupe, sport, lightweight construction

these three words are behind the abbreviation CSL. And they are as much an honor as they are a burden for this tradition-rich past. Whether it’s the 1971 BMW 3.0 CSL, nicknamed the Batmobile because of its rear spoiler, or the radical M3 CSL of 2003, engineers had to slim down the M4 Competition, which serves as the basis for the latest incarnation of the CSL! And yet, the M4 can’t complain about being overweight.

The CSL Diet

M engineers have eliminated weight by hundreds of grams and Here’s a brief overview of the key measures:

Strength training

BMW M did not stop there. Of course, the inline six-cylinder under the carbon hood has also received more power. After all, it is also to serve the S of CSL for “sport”.

M engineers have increased the boost pressure from 0.4 to 2.1 bar and changed the engine management. In doing so, they draw an additional 40 hp (29 kW) from the aggregate and push the M4 CSL to 550 hp (405 kW) and 650 Nm.

All this power is transmitted to the road via the 8-speed automatic transmission and the rear wheels. The BMW M4 CSL reaches 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than the M4 Competition. The 200 km/h is reached after 10.7 seconds from a standing start, and the speed stops at 307 km/h. With a throaty sound that even covers the Competition.

50 Years M Edition

Those who find the CSL too extreme can also celebrate the M renaissance with the special model “50 Years M Edition”. The special models of the M4 (for the US of the M3) will be produced from July to October.

For this, five exclusive paint schemes are available: Carbon Black, Macau Blue, Brands Hatch Grey, Imol Red and San Marino Blue. In addition, the inscription “50 Years BMW M Edition” appears on the door sill, center console and seat headrests.

Seven examples of the special M4 model are planned for Switzerland, two of them with the M-Racetrack package. The additional price varies between 15,000 and 30,000 francs depending on the equipment.

M engineers have also sharpened the chassis and lowered the bodywork by eight millimeters. They also increased the front axle camber, installed stronger stabilizer bars, replaced all rubber mounts on the rear axle with ball joints, reduced the stiffness of the springs, and adapted the software for the adaptive dampers.

BMW CSL on the podium

The result of these measures is a lap time on the Nürburgring Nordschleife (D) of 7:20.207 minutes. The M4 CSL thus set the fastest time ever achieved by a BMW production model on the legendary asphalt.

To afford the new edition of the iconic CSL sports car, you’ll need to have at least 214,900 francs in your pocket and above all, you’ll need to be quick:

When lightweight construction meets increased power.

All the info on the super M4!

Coupe, sport, lightweight construction.

Three words that immediately send shivers down your spine. And they are inseparable from two of the greatest sports coupes of all time. Abbreviated to the initials CSL, they were previously only available for the 3.0 CSL and the M3 CSL.

Because here comes CSL number three – the new M4 CSL. Just in time for the 50th anniversary of BMW M GmbH and a good two decades after the M3 CSL (2003).

A red box for the M4 CSL

The look of the M4 CSL is certainly sporty. Thanks to lighter, more air-permeable inserts, the BMW now breathes even more freely through the kidneys, the carbon front lip with side spoilers provides thrust on the front axle, and the exposed carbon parts on the engine hood give a glimpse of the fiber structure.

For the occasion, the M4 CSL wears the logo “50 years of BMW M”. Each CSL gets a kidney circled in red.In order to bring some life, the designers used the color red only for decorative purposes. The kidneys and visible carbon strips are trimmed in red, the skirts and rocker panels are accented in red, the CFRP roof is coated in red and the carbon-ceramic brake calipers are also red.

Added to this are CSL-specific wheels with mixed tires (19-inch front/20-inch rear) and Cup 2 R tires specifically designed for the CSL.

At the rear, there’s a curvature. That’s because, unlike the 2016 M4 GTS, M engineers don’t give the M4 CSL an add-on spoiler, but an integrated spoiler that curves from the CFRP rear cover.

The rear carries a high breakaway edge and taillights with filigree light graphics. Laser technology is at work here. The M3 CSL greets us. On the right and left, laser taillights are lit for the first time and show, six years after the M4 GTS, with OLED technology in the taillights, what is possible today in terms of lighting technology.

A little lower down

classically arranged exhaust outlets, which form the end of the titanium silencer. Combined with reduced insulation, the M4 CSL should sound syrupy in this configuration.

Interior

no rear seat, but helmet nets To say that the hard shells offer immense lateral support is an understatement.

Let’s just say that the optional carbon M bucket seats in the M3 and M4 seem almost limp compared to the CSL’s full shells.

Alcantara and brutal bucket seats characterize the interior of the special model. If you want to sit higher or lower, you have to go to the shop for adjustment.

In addition, the CSL’s interior offers a standard alcantara steering wheel, helmet nets and carpeting instead of the rear seat and CSL logos.

Technical changes reduced ground clearance and new strut bridge

The M4 hyper sports car makes a point of being 8 millimeters lower, CSL-specific axle kinematics with increased negative camber, a new strut axle bridge on the front axle and ball joints instead of rubber seals on the rear axle.

Weight reduction

lightweight construction isn’t just the order of the day on the M4.

A few weigh have also been saved on the M4 CSL.

The “finishing” of the trunk and the installed soundproofing have reduced the weight by 15 kilograms, while more significant weight reductions have been achieved in the cabin.

Compared to the standard M4 Competition, the all-carbon seats reduce weight by an additional 24 kilograms. In addition, the rear bench seat is removed and the center console is made entirely of carbon.

Ready for the track – instead of the rear seat, there is a helmet net behind the front seats.

And now, here’s what the lightweight construction efforts have achieved. According to its own figures, M has saved 100 kilograms of weight compared to an M4 Competition. With a curb weight of 1,625 kilograms, the M4 CSL weighs significantly less than the M4 Competition.

Engine and power: more power for the special BMW modelBut this does not affect driving performance, because thanks to increased boost pressure (2.1 bar instead of 1.7) and adapted engine management, the twin-turbocharged S58 inline six is in top form. 550 hp and 650 NM
